What You Need To Know About Fibromyalgia Skin Disorders

People with fibromyalgia face several types of fibromyalgia skin disorders. These problems can go hand in hand with your fibro symptoms.

Hypersensitivity To Stimuli

Fibromyalgia happens due to an excessive pain as a result of hypersensitive stimuli. This happens when your nervous system reacts to something that should normally not feel pain. Your nervous system is basically giving you signals that are not actually there. This condition is known as hyperalgesia which translates to “excess pain”. The excess pain can take place almost anywhere. Hence, since your skin is the largest organ, it can easily be hypersensitive to certain things.

Just because your skin is hypersensitive does not mean that you are suffering from another disorder on top of fibromyalgia. However, if you start noticing additional pain, it is best to consult your doctor

Common Fibromyalgia Skin Disorders

There are various skin disorders that are linked to fibromyalgia. These disorders will often go hand in hand with your fibromyalgia symptoms.

  • Tactile Allodynia – this is one of the worst skin condition which fibromyalgia patients have to deal with. This skin condition will make it difficult for any contact with your skin. In fact, the term refers to a feeling of pain as a result of a non-painful touch.
  • Rosacea – this occurs if your cheeks get rosy easily even if there is no reason why they should. If you have rosacea, the skin surrounding your cheeks, forehead and nose will turn red and become swollen as well. The reason behind this is because those little vessels in your skin may be swollen.
  • Dermatographism – also known as skin writing, this is an odd skin condition. When you have dermatographism, a bump would develop on your skin after you scratch and along the scratch lines. When you scratch further, you will see tiny red marks appearing around the bump. These bumps and red marks will not go away and will stay there for a long time. People with this condition can write words on their skin by scratching.

If you have fibromyalgia, taking care of your skin is absolutely important. As mentioned, you can suffer from several skin conditions because of fibromyalgia. The best thing that you can do is to keep your skin moisturized at all times to prevent dry skin which can exacerbate pain.
